January 2012: National Apprenticeship week 2012

National Apprenticeship Week 2012 will take place from Monday 6 February to Friday 10 February. It will celebrate the talent and skills of apprentices from across England and you will see apprentices, employers and a range of partners showcasing the benefits of Apprenticeships and the value apprentices bring to the organisations they work for.

National and regional activities will be taking place throughout the Week.

A group of 12 learners have successfully completed their apprenticeship framework in Business Administration and Management as part of S&A Davies’ continued commitment to staff development. Key workers in supervisory and administrative roles have received regular support from Shirley, Jane and Fiona. This multinational company has seen learners complete their studies from: England; Lithuania; Bulgaria; Russia; Ukraine and Slovakia. Riverside Training opens new Somerset office

Riverside Training's Somerset office

On 1 July 2011, we took possession of our new base in Somerset at the Stables Business Park, Rooksbridge, Somerset BS26 2TH, a short distance from Junction 22 of the M5. It provides an ideal base for operations including: Bristol, Bath, Somerset and the South West.

With a manned office, it will be used for interviews, meetings and workshops for learners and external enquiries.

Jacob gets a taste for Business

Jacob Howells, 16 years old, from Bishops High School spent a week of work experience learning all about Business Administration at Riverside Training, St Martins Street, Hereford. Administration Officer, Natasha Hoban said,” We are proud to say we provided Jacob with an insight into working life, and gave him the opportunity to experience what it would be like to work in an office. He gained knowledge on how to produce office documents and to solve office related problems.”

Raising the bar of vocational teaching

Riverside has been involved in a project with Warwick University and Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire Training Providers Association to deliver vocational teaching qualifications.

In the project, nineteen small work based learning (WBL) organisations across Herefordshire & Worcestershire share a bank of trained mentors through an innovative and successful mentoring scheme to support new teachers to the industry studying a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

The project has been selected as a case study for Lifelong Learning UK to highlight good practice.

Cooks lead the way

The school is a Food for Life Flagship School, transforming food culture, revolutionising school meals and connecting children with where their food comes from. Riverside has been expanding its geographical reach offering catering qualifications in Somerset through Train to Gain and Apprenticeships. We now have two members of staff working out of Taunton working with restaurants, pubs and hotels from Minehead and further north including Bath and Bristol. Riverside is Norway Bound

Philip Broomhead of Riverside Training with delegates from nine European Partner Countries at the Leonardo da Vinci Project meeting in Trondheim

Director of Learning, Philip Broomhead joined a group of 9 European Partner Countries in Trondheim, Norway for the third meeting of a Leonardo da Vinci Project – POETE (portfolio of Evidence to Europe). The project looks at learning and assessment in work based training. Philip said, "It is a great opportunity to meet other European countries and see how vocational education and training is delivered. We have a lot to share and learn from our partnership". Riverside supports Children in Need

Riverside Training's Pudsey Lunch in aid of Children in Need

On 18 November 2009, we raised £130.20 from our Pudsey Lunch in aid of Children in Need. The Hospitality & Catering Team (IV Helen Lindley; Assessor Helen Watson; and Assessor Peter Scrivener) cooked a three course lunch for all staff in the office which made a pleasant and sociable alternative to grabbing your sandwich and running!

June 2009: International Learners meet National Standards

Three learners from Hungary, Czech Republic and the Philippines have completed their NVQ Level 2 in Hospitality & Catering in 7 months. The three kitchen and front of house staff are employees of the Burton Hotel, Kington where proprietor John Richardson ensures that staff get the appropriate qualifications and skills to do a quality job.

Assessors Paul Jenkins and Helen Watson, of Riverside, said “It has been a joy to work with Noriel, Niki and Jiri, they are committed and enthusiastic in their work”.

MatrixSeptember 2008: Riverside achieves Matrix Accreditation

Riverside has been given the Matrix Award for the outstanding initial advice and guidance offered by its staff. This external quality kite mark was assessed by the East Midlands Quality Centre following interviews with staff, learners, employers and other stakeholders.

This award ratifies the hard work we have been doing to ensure that all our learners and employers receive impartial and accurate advice about the qualifications we offer and ensuring it is exactly right for our clients.

Another bagful of awards were taken by Riverside at the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Learner Awards Evening held on 18th September 2008 at Worcester Rugby Club.

Congratulations to Samera Watkins of SHYPP (Supported Housing for Young People) for the Train to Gain Learner of the Year and Boots of Hereford for Herefordshire Employer of the Year. Rob Ramshaw won the Herefordshire 14-16 Learner of the Year and our very own Steve Harrison won the prestigious H&W Practitioner of the Year.

Rafal KochanskiMay 2008: Goodbye to Rafal

In the past 2 years, we have enjoyed the company of our Polish Liaison Officer, Rafal Kochanski who joined us as part of an ESF project to increase our work with migrant workers wishing to settle in our county. During his time, Rafal worked with over 250 learners running ESOL courses in Hereford, Leominster, Pershore and Evesham. We wish him well in his new job at HR Smith.

Congratulations to Anna Pugh and Jeanette Hodges who won prestigious training awards at the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Learner Awards Evening held on 6 September 2007 at Worcester Rugby Club.

Anna, working at Cloisters Cafe, Hereford Cathedral was awarded the Herefordshire Apprentice of the Year and Jeanette, working at Ross Labels was awarded the Herefordshire Train to Gain award.

Both awards were presented by TV adventurer and personality Ben Fogle.
